The Face Behind the Comments

Posted by Liz McCoy Tuesday, February 24, 2009 View Comments

Have you ever been on a blog or website and seen comment areas where someone’s picture shows up and others do not. There is usually a place holder there that looks like:

 NoPictureDark[1]

These little profile pictures are also called avatars.

Typically you have to register some place to get your profile picture to show up on one blog then another place for another site. Kind of annoying huh?

That’s where GRAVATAR.COM comes in.

image

__

What is a gravatar?

A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?

~copied from gravatar.com

Why would I want this service?
Having one place to update your avatar comes in handy, it puts a consistent face out there on the web to your comments, making them a bit more personal. I feel like I connect with people better and remember them when I see their face and a username over and over, and not just a name. I am usually so bombarded with names that without a picture they tend to blur together.

Who cares if I have a picture or not?
As we all know you can not accurately convey emotion, tone of voice, sarcasm, and when you respond in a language that is not your first language some things are lost in translation. Having an avatar with a smile or a scowl will also color your comments and give more insight to your words.

What pictures make good avatars?
Pictures that capture who you are. What a general answer huh? Okay here is an exercise. List 3 or 4 adjectives that describe who you are (or who you like to portray if that differs for you :P ) For me I like to think of myself as light-hearted, goofy, positive and fun. (Don’t tell me if you disagree-I don’t want to know—LOL).

Okay, do you have your adjectives in your head?  Go and find a picture that illustrates, one or all of them.  Do you have your picture? Fantastic!
Me too! LOOKIE:

Now go sign up at gravatar.com and put a face to your comments, and watch out for my goofy face around the world wide web!

Cheese!

Yippie, Last night I sat up at the computer and got a scrapbook page done. I can tick one more off on my counter (that will be a total of 9 out of 50 layouts for 2009)

The Story -- This photo was taken for one of my photos a day for January. I wanted to try out some products from one of our new apprentice designers at DSP Teresa Loman. Her kit matched Jack’s outfit perfectly! I’m loving his new cheesy grin. Oh and when I saw Lisa Carter’s glittery new alphas I about died! I’m so happy I could use the them on this layout!

Sunday Savings: The Coupon Database

Posted by Liz McCoy Sunday, February 22, 2009 View Comments

While looking through the weekly sale flyer do you ever ask yourself “Isn’t there a coupon for that?”. You kind of remember seeing something in all your coupon reviewing but now you have no clue where you saw it.

OR

Maybe you have a need for something but you know that you won’t buy it unless you have a coupon, but you have no idea if there is a coupon for that item or even that store.

That is where the Coupon Database comes in.

Coupon Database - Mozilla Firefox 2222009 63403 PM.bmp

For example, I notice in my sales flyer Fruit Roll-ups are BOGO I’m not sure if there is a coupon or not so I head to the database.

As I start to type in Fruit Roll-ups listings already begin to show:

Coupon Database - Mozilla Firefox 2222009 71547 PM.bmp

Let’s Review the search options:

Coupon Database - Mozilla Firefox 2222009 71740 PM.bmp

Value – You can specify the amount of the coupon ie. $1, $.35, etc

Source – Is where it came from, an insert, home mailer, blinkie, printable, etc.

Store – Name of the store

Category – Is the category of the item on the coupon. ie. Snacks, Refrigerated, Baby & Children, Frozen, Health & Beauty, etc.

Expired – You can choose to see the expired coupons should your stores accept expired coupons.

Now let’s look at how to read the results of your search in the Coupon Database.

Coupon Database - Mozilla Firefox 2222009 72313 PM.bmp
At the end of each description you will find the location of where the coupon was found. In this example the coupon is found in the General Mills (GM) Insert issued 02-08-09.
The value box will indicate the dollar amount first then after the ‘/’ it will show you the quantity of product you must buy to make the coupon effective.  So for this first example you see that the coupon is one dollar off 3 boxes.

Notice our results above show many coupons.  You may have all the coupons listed or you may have 1, 2 or 0 of the coupons listed. The coupon database will let you know YES/NO there is a coupon and where it is found.  Depending on how you organize your coupons will determine how to locate the coupon in your stash.

I encourage you to go check out the Coupon Database, it is a tremendous FREE resource and will definitely aid you in your couponing endeavors.

PAD: Things I Love (Days 8 – 14)

Posted by Liz McCoy Thursday, February 19, 2009 View Comments

Here are my photos from February 8th through 13th. Sorry for the tardiness. This is my BUSIEST time of the year at work.

0208PAD

This photo is actually taken on the 8th (go me!) I went on a photo walk with my friend Candace around Historic Duluth.  What do I love in this photo?? The color GREEN.  It is my favorite color and I love how bright and beautiful the moss growing in between the bricks was, I took a few pictures along our walk.

0209PAD
I love how much my son loves his Aunt J.  She is in winter guard at her school and this is her little practice poll and she taught Jack how to properly wave the flag (sorry I don’t know the proper terminology)

0210PAD
I love TOYS! I think I’ve said that numerous times. This is my son’s new foreclosure he got it for a great price.  Grandma and Grandpa actually bought it for him at a garage sale. I had spotted it earlier at the sale but just couldn’t afford the price as we’re on a spending freeze at our house. I wanted to go back to the sale later in the day to see if the seller would come down on the price but I think I ended up going back to work. It needs a bit of fixing up (Clorox) and it will be as good ad new! I especially love it because it isn’t pink (that’s for you honey) and one side is a half wall so it is very open in the back. It also has a grill and that’s pretty manly.

0211PAD

I love the incredible weather we’ve had this February. There have been a few days in the upper 70’s and many days in the upper 60’s and lower 70’s. It has been tremendous to be outside without jackets and not having to deal with pollen or bugs or life threatening heat.  Jack helped Grandpa and Dan work on the yard one afternoon. He sure does love helping Grandpa, especially when some kind of tool is involved.

0212PAD
I love crafting. This was my latest craft project paper heart baskets made from scrapbook paper. I gave these out at work for valentines day.

0213PAD

These are my state binders where I keep all my tax filing procedures and information for each state. I love how pretty they look all in the file drawer (is that weird???). Fuctioning organization is really something I LOVE LOVE LOVE.

0214PAD
Okay this is not a photo I took but one my 2yo son did!!!  I’m loving his photography and he’s loving using my camera.  He is getting REALLY good at it too. I played with a few effects in light room. This was taken on Valentine’s Day at our happy hearts day coffee house, I’m so thankful to have a photo of the two of us from that day.  Read all about my best happy hearts day ever here.

I chopped it off!

Posted by Liz McCoy View Comments

About 3 or 4 inches of my hair. Maybe you can tell but the ends of my hair were soo dried out and unhealthy the back was the same way. Over the last few weeks – month my hair has gotten worse and worse and worse. It was falling out and I could hardly brush it, because the tangles were never ending. Finally I realized that I hadn’t trimmed it in a while and I had been just letting it grow and grow freely. Oops duh!!  So my mom cut off the bottom few inches it feels much better already.  I will probably go to the hair dresser in a few weeks to have it layered a bit but this will do for now.  Oh and the important part…I can still get it in a pony tail :)

Before:

After:

Oh ignore the bags under my eyes and the over all worn look it’s been a busy few weeks (err years).

Tackle it Tuesday: 2yo Activity Calendar

Posted by Liz McCoy Wednesday, February 18, 2009 View Comments

Okay this was my tackle for yesterday. Sorry I’m late in posting it was a LONG day and everything moved much slower than I had intended. Consequently I’m not finished with this project but I am well on my way.  I got 2 blank school calendars from Scholastic and had them laminated at the school box. I had an idea to make little reusable stickers on each day to help show my two year old son what he is doing today and to help him start to understand the concept of time, i.e. today yesterday and tomorrow, etc.  I am wanting to go down to Disney World in a few months so I though this would help build the excitement when that time comes to see the days on the calendar.

DSCN3648

He asked me what he was doing today so I said let’s go look at your calendar.  Although this picture shows him pointing at the wrong day I did show him which day it was and he said I’m going to grandma’s house and to the chiropractor and play basketball at grandma’s house. THAT’S RIGHT!! HE’S GETTING IT!!

The first attempt at the “stickers” I made them MUCH too big and one activity took up the whole square. So attempt #2 I made each image one inch square.  That works out great as I can get 4 items on the calendar day.

My plans to finish it off are to make a little Jack cut out that will move along to each day, each morning we’ll move the jack doll over one day and establish that routine so he will start to know which day is today and what he will be doing. The conclusion of this project maybe my tackle for next Tuesday.

Were you able to tackle anything yesterday?  Do you have something to tackle today??

PLEASE NOTE!!! Copied from HCW forum Announcements

RedPlum coupon inserts will no longer be in our newspapers in certain areas! Find out how you can help bring back the coupons!

As of February 1st 2009, RedPlum coupon inserts have been discontinued in many newspapers throughout major US cities. The Valassis Corporation, which distributes the RedPlum, does not realize how this will affect consumers like us and our ability to donate to the needy, keep our own pantry filled, and a host of other reasons.
Valassis has responded by saying that consumers can "now print coupons from their website," but the problem is that many stores refuse to accept internet printed coupons & this will limit how many coupons we can get.
Please join HCW and other like-minded couponers from across the country fight this. Go to http://www.bringbackthecoupons.com/ and post a comment on how this will negatively affect you and your family.
*Also, be sure to let the advertisers who use RP to distribute their coupons just how unhappy this has made you. The BringBackTheCoupons site has a page featuring ALL RedPlum advertiser contact links and a form letter you can use to easily do this.
Follow this discussion further here on HCW at this thread: We're not getting RP inserts anymore!!??

FYI – The Atlanta Area will not be affected by this.

Let me know if you discover if your area is loosing the Red Plum inserts.  I will update this post.

Happy Hearts Day!

Posted by Liz McCoy Saturday, February 14, 2009 View Comments

What a wonderful day.  Ken and I are not very romantic people we are definitely LOVING and care for each other deeply we just aren’t romantic. We’ve also never been big on Happy Hearts Day but I was thinking about it this week and asking myself WHY NOT?  Why not just take ONE day out of three hundred and sixty-five and be ROMANTIC!  There is nothing wrong with that right?  We don’t have to spend money we don’t have to get goofy little stuffed animals etc. We just have to express our love in our words, and actions.

So this morning I got to sleep in a bit (7:15??) and Ken came in with a yummy breakfast in bed!!! How unexpected and sooo sweet!

He even made my toast into 2 hearts :)

What a a great husband!  Tonight we’re going to our branch’s Happy Hearts Day Coffee House.  Many people from our fellowship will be performing. It should be a tender time in God’s Word celebrating LOVE! Who better to learn about love then from GOD our heavenly father who loves us so much that he gave his only son.

I wanted to share with you the craft project I worked on this week for my coworkers, I will be doing a tutorial later but here is a peek at the finished project made from scrapbook paper.

And lastly I want to share with you a really fun video of Disney Love Scenes put to music I thought this was soo sweet and definitely gets me in the Lovey Dovey mindset.

HAPPY HEARTS DAY!!!!!!  I’d love to hear about your Happy Heart’s Day plans.  Oh and don’t forget to vote in this month’s poll (over in the right hand column).

Forgotten Photo Friday – Sisters circa 1991

forgottenphotofriday

Today’s photo is a scan from 1991. My sisters and I all dressed up in our matching dresses. I’m sure this was a photo for the grandparents, at this time we were still living in Kansas just about to move out of state.  I’m the one on the far right…look at that wild hair.  I love thinking about my childhood in Kansas, they are such fun pleasant memories. So much freedom and outdoor time. I was such a tomboy then but now I’ve definitely grown more girly.

Couponing 101: Stockpiling

Posted by eisor Thursday, February 12, 2009 View Comments

Step 5: Stockpiling
Stockpiling and couponing go hand in hand. If you can get an item really cheap that you will use, then why not get 10 of that item? You should only buy multiple of items that you have room to store and if they are non-perishable. I personally have at least 6-12 months supply of toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, shaving cream, razors, paper towels, napkins, paper plates, cups, laundry detergent, dish soap, frozen foods and much more. Many of these items I’ve gotten for free or nearly free.

When stockpiling, be sure to remain organized and only buy what you have room to store. Also, be sure you only buy what your family can use. A family of 6 will need more toothpaste than a single person.

Now that you are fully equipped with the supplies you need to coupon, go find some great deals!

When you find a good deal, you want to make sure you purchase a few of that item instead of just one. Why get a good deal now and then have to pay full price down the road. Your goal should be to purchase enough of the sale item to last you until the next time it goes on sale.

So, these mean you’ll be buying in higher quantities than you may be used to. It’s time to begin storing the items you purchase. Be sure to get be organized. Determine where you are going to store your goods.

I store my health & beauty items in my bathroom drawers & cabinets. I store the paper goods & laundry soap in the linen closet. The cleaning chemicals, dish soap, air freshener and trash bags all go under the kitchen sink. Food items go in the pantry. If I have to much of something, I store it in a file box and stack them neatly in my closet.

Once you’ve figured out where to store you items, you need to make sure you “maintain” your stock pile. When you purchase new items, put them in the back. This way the items in the front expire first. Periodically go through your food to check for expired items. Also, if you end up not liking something you purchased, go ahead and donate it.

Also, hotcouponworld has an entire forum dedicated to stockpiling. It’s a great forum because you can learn what you can and cannot freeze, as well as great organizational tips!

Tackle it Tuesday: The Kid’s Room

Posted by Liz McCoy Tuesday, February 10, 2009 View Comments

Alrightie I was able to accomplish another tackle today (WOO HOO I’m so proud of myself).  I did Jack’s room and the before pictures are quite scary.  Let me give some background so I can make a good excuse as to why my little boy’s room was sooo messy.

Trouble spot #1 the bottom 2 shelves of the book shelves and the floor in front.  I had a little while ago started to sort out clothes and crib bedding and brought in the winter clothes. Well the tub never got filled completely so it sat there until today. As you can see more and stuff piled on top of it to become a heaping mess!
DSCN3549

Trouble spot #2 the other side of the rocking chair and the closet behind it. As you can see the closet is a catch all for the stuff I haven’t either packed up or just don’t have a place for at the moment. This used to be more of a functional space when he was an infant as it was his changing table and stored his clothes until we got the dresser and he moved out of the crib. Then it went down hill from there. I have over the months straightened it a bit.

DSCN3550

Okay let’s get to the good stuff the after pictures!!!  I know I’m excited about these because the room looks great now! Ahhh much better the bookshelf is all nice and neat the books are straight and I vacuumed the shelves to dust them.  The fish basket hanging on the side is where we keep his socks :).  We’ll see how long the books stay this way but hopefully for a while.

DSCN3558

And now the closet. I feel so much better having tackled this space as it has been bothering me for a while.  I usually clean while he is asleep because he likes to play with the things I’m picking up.  Which was the case today with his books and clothes etc. And another reason I haven’t tackled his room in a while.

DSCN3559

Here is his changing table/dresser with all clothes that fit him.  He recently just stopped being able to wear 24 mos / 2 T clothes so there were still some in there that needed to be taken out. Sorry for the bad picture it is a REALLY sunny day today.

DSCN3560

And his nicely made big boy bed. I want to hang his fake bear skin rug on the wall above his bed but I haven’t quite figured it out yet as to how I will do that.

DSCN3561

Thanks for coming along with me on my tackle.  Have you tackled anything today?
